Wardrobes are usually the second biggest item in your bedroom (after the bed!) so getting the right one is absolutely imperative.
If you’re a fashion lover we might recommend a walk in wardrobe, but those are not always an option and you’d be surprised at how similar an effect you can create with a modern wardrobe.
We’ve had a chat to Hammonds, wardrobe experts, who have given us their top ten tips on what to look for when buying a wardrobe.
1. What are your storage needs
There’s no point going out to buy a wardrobe if you don’t know how much space you need. Not only do you need to think about how much storage you will need, but you also need to think of the type. You may have a lot of jewellery or accessories and need more drawer space. Alternatively, you might have a job where you wear a lot of suits and need hanging space.
2. Does it need to match other furniture
Wardrobes will stand out in your bedroom so they need to fit the style of the room and be something you can make a feature of. Tailor-made wardrobes will be unique to you, but can be quite pricey so do your research. Mismatched or “shabby chic” furniture is very popular right now. Keep it minimal to avoid your room looking cluttered.
3. Do you get a guarantee
Most wardrobes should come with a guarantee to cover them if things go wrong. They are usually around 10 years depending on the company. If you are not sure then you should ask as, like any large item of furniture, wardrobes are expensive to repair or replace.
4. Will it suit your clothes
This seems like a silly thing to consider, but it is more of a practical consideration than a superficial one. If it is a free standing piece then check that the rails are at a decent height for you/your clothing. If it is a built in wardrobe you can discuss with the designer what storage/height considerations they need to make when drawing up a plan.
5. Sliding or swing doors
Sliding wardrobes give a sleek finish and you don’t need to worry about allowing space for the doors to pull open. They are very contemporary and can even be practical i.e. if they are mirrored as this adds space to a room and allows you to put your makeup on/check your outfit all in one go. Wardrobes with doors that open outwards take up more space, but are usually quite traditional. Think of the space you have and work out the practicalities of this choice.
6. Can you customise the interior
There are so many ways to customise the inside of your wardrobe to suit your needs. Adding angled display shelves with fences allow you to show off your favourite shoes. Including a belt or tie rack will help you be more organised. You can fit this yourself or ask a wardrobe designer to recommend some ideas.
7. Interior lighting or not
This is something important you should factor in when choosing your wardrobe. It is a really useful idea for when you’re dressing on a dark morning or don’t want to disturb your partner. They brighten up your wardrobe space so you can find things easily.
8. Finishes
From traditional wood to coloured glass and even gloss, there is a choice of finish for every room. Try to choose something that won’t date quickly, as this is a big investment that should last. High gloss is very on-trend at the moment and will complement any room for years to come.
9. Drawers
These should have a solid base and open easily. Any drawers that are just made from hardboard and stuck onto the frame will not last and should be avoided.
10. Colour
Colourful furniture is really on trend, but may not stand the test of time. Wooden wardrobes are elegant and timeless. You can choose various colours to suit the style of your room and some companies will even tint the wood in your favourite shade. This will help your wardrobe to blend in with other furniture or contrast as you desire.
