It can be hard to keep the romance alive in a relationship, but by making changes to the way you accessorise your house, you could help create a warm, passionate atmosphere in your abode. Here are three suggestions on how to boost the romantic ambience in your home.
1. Lighting
You don’t have to make big changes to your house or flat to achieve this, and perhaps the biggest purchase you make will be a few lamps. Big central lights can be a romance killer, with the bright light giving the illusion of daytime, which doesn’t encourage people to unwind and relax.
Instead, opt for small lamps and place these around the living room or bedroom, and then switch off the main light. You’ll soon notice what a difference soft lighting makes – at first you may feel as though it is a bit dim, but your eyes adjust and you’ll begin to appreciate the calming qualities of low lights.
When people think of lamps, they typically imagine shades you place on a side table, but you can choose bulbs that you position on the edge of shelves, lights situated on the top of work surfaces in your kitchen and lanterns you hang from the ceiling. Moroccan hanging lamps are particularly good at creating a romantic atmosphere, as the patterns cut into their metal casings create beautiful light features on your walls. You can end up with an entire room lit by intricate designs, and if you combine this lamp with the following two suggestions, you can be sure to create a very romantic atmosphere.
2. Scents
The other thing that definitely encourages an amorous ambience is scents. If you plan to dot your room with little candles – whether they are floating candles in little bowls or big, grand church candles – it is a good idea to pick ones that have a pleasant smell to them.
Obviously, the scent you opt for will depend on your personal taste. However, it is wise to steer clear of anything too strong, tropical or a smell that is very particular, as this may be off putting to your partner or date. Instead, opt for a comforting smell – if you can, sniff the candle when buying it or read what the description of the scent is on the label.
If you don’t fancy having candles, there are other options you can consider, including incense, potpourri and even sprays.
3. Music
The final touch to your romantic evening has to be music. What songs you put on the stereo will have a huge impact on how the night will run. If you pick tunes that have a strong melody, recognisable lyrics and a loud bass, this is sure to distract your company, whatever genre of music it is that you play.
It is therefore wise to choose songs that can blend in as background music – perhaps select ones that have no words or tunes that are very soft and calming in their lyrical and melodic content. You don’t want to upset someone’s taste in music, but having something that can be tuned out with a conversation is probably ideal.
The trick to creating a romantic atmosphere is doing all three of these things – singularly, they may not really change the ambience of your lounge, but together they will certainly make a huge difference and help you and your partner to completely relax for an evening in together.
