Hard-wearing, on-trend patio paving options: expert advice from Focus DIY

Q: “I want to get the terrace at the back of my house resurfaced before the summer. At the minute it’s covered in very boring, big, greyish paving stones. I would like to give it a more ‘Mediterranean’ feel by perhaps using smaller terracotta flags or tiles, but wondered whether there were any maintenance problems that I should be aware of.”
Sarah, High Wycombe

A: “The ‘Mediterranean’ look is a big trend this year and it needn’t present any maintenance problems. Focus’s Old Town range is manufactured from reconstituted stone, making it durable and long-lasting, and the flagstones can easily be kept clean using a pressure washer.

“Alternatively, if you’re looking for a smaller flagstone, you could try the special-order Traditional Tile range (pictured, available from end of March). It’s manufactured from reconstituted stone to look like real terracotta, but it has all the benefits of a concrete paver: the tiles are frost-resistant, easy to clean and maintain, and can either be used in a single size for a simple design or coordinated with diamond edgings for something truly original.”
