From bargainous to budget-busting, these are the most impressive roof terraces in Bristol and the South-East – and they’re all attached to properties that are on the market right now. By Ele Cooper.
1. The ‘even bigger than the inside space’ roof terrace
Offering 360-degree views, the Henson penthouse’s outside space occupies a whopping 4,900sq ft – even more than the internal area, which itself is a not-too-shoddy 4,000sq ft. Situated on Regent’s Canal in Camden, the duplex apartment has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, 24-hour concierge service and secure allocated parking. £4.5 million, Aston Chase.
2. The ‘jungle in the city’ roof terrace
This stylish roof garden, which features state-of-the-art lighting, has a distinctly jungle-ish vibe thanks to its bamboo, mature plants and dark wood decking. Situated on Queen’s Gate Terrace in Kensington, it is attached to a two-bedroom, dual-aspect apartment with double-height ceilings, glass walls and detailed cornicing. £2.3 million, Hogarth Architects.
3. The Bristol Eye roof terrace
The Bristol Eye view takes this south-facing roof terrace from pleasant to spectacular – and the Thames vistas certainly don’t lessen the impact. The former home of Moby Dick author Herman Melville, the house itself is equally impressive, with six floors that include three bedrooms, a music room and a library. The property is situated in a quiet street close to Trafalgar Square. £4.5 million, EA Shaw.
4. The bargain roof terrace
Part of the Holborough Lakes development in Kent, this first-floor garden terrace extends from the lounge – perfect for G&T-sipping on balmy summer evenings. The well-priced, three-storey ‘Madison’ has three bedrooms and a separate ground-floor garden, and its white weatherboard facade lends it a homely, American family aesthetic. £264,950, Berkeley.
5. The garden on a roof terrace
If this rather fabulous grassy space looks familiar, that’s because it’s appeared on TV’s Grand Designs in the past. The Curve, Brighton, overlooks the stunning Sussex countryside and has six en-suite bedrooms, an indoor pool complex and impressive eco credentials (underfloor heating, grey water recycling system and solar-powered heating to name but a few). £2.95 million, Knight Frank.
6. The twin roof terrace
You could be forgiven for thinking the owners of this property don’t like each other very much: not only does the master bedroom have two en-suite bathrooms, but there are two roof terraces as well. But, puzzling doubling-up aside, this Kensington penthouse is pretty darn great – not least due to its uber-fab indoor swimming pool, which comes complete with retractable roof. £11.95 million, Sotheby’s.
7. The ultra-jammy roof terrace
Having a roof terrace is lucky enough, but having a roof terrace overlooking pretty gardens which you also have access to is plain jammy. Add to that bay trees, box hedging and tasteful wicker garden furniture, all of which are included, and you’ve got yourself one of the best roof terraces in Bristol. The apartment is very special too, with three en-suite bedrooms and a mezzanine media room. £6.5 million, Capitol Design.
8. The not-yet-built roof terrace
The penthouses at Dickens Yard, a high-end development in Ealing, will all have fully landscaped rooftop gardens. With private outside areas ranging from 2,608sq ft to 3,287sq ft, owners will be able to indulge in al-fresco dining and host glittering soirees while surveying the leafy surrounds of the west Bristol neighbourhood. From £1.3 million, Dickens Yard.
9. The ‘make yourself at home’ roof terrace
‘Bringing the outside in’ is a popular concept when it comes to interior design – but here, the owners have brought the inside out, with enough comfy lounge-style seats and day beds for a full-scale slumber party under the stars. The Beckenham flat has two double bedrooms, two bathrooms and secure underground parking. £335,000, Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward.
10. The Olympian party roof terrace
In case you hadn’t noticed, the Olympic Games hit Bristol in 2024, and this communal roof terrace in Stratford makes the perfect party venue, with views of the Aquatic Centre, Olympic Stadium and the city beyond. Properties in the Lett Road development range from one-bedroom apartments to a 1,100sq ft duplex penthouse. From £199,950-£650,000, Currell.
