Top ten tips: Preparing your home for winter

With the wintery weather upon us it’s high time you made sure that your home is fully prepared for the cold months ahead.

To help you out with that we’ve had a chat to Kate Sitch from Ronseal, who has given us her top ten tips on getting your property ready for winter, both inside and out.

1. Garden furniture

If the weather this winter is the same as last year, then your garden furniture needs to be protected, before being stored away or covered. Use a protective stain or paint on your furniture so that it stands up to the British weather.

2. Decking

Protecting your decking will ensure the garden still looks great during wintry days and dark nights. Having a smart decking area with a chimnea offers a social hub even on the coldest of evenings.

3. Painting exterior wood

When it comes to painting exterior wood, natural green shades and light pastels work brilliantly. They can look dazzling in the summer and give the illusion of green foliage during darker months.

4. Wet weather

Wet weather is wood’s worst nightmare. If water gets into your wood it will cause swelling and rot. Front doors can take a battering, so keep yours protected by applying a couple of coats of weatherproof paint just before winter sets in.

5. Fences

Get your fences winter ready, try Ronseal One Coat Sprayable Fencelife.  It only needs one coat, and dries in less than two hours. To make it even easier, it can be clipped directly to a power sprayer to do the job even faster.

6. Refreshing your interior

Now you’ll be spending more time inside, give your home a quick refresh with a lick of bright paint. Winter won’t seem as gloomy.

7. Trap heat inside

A really simple way to trap in heat in the colder months is to make sure any cracks around window frames, doors, pipes and electrical outlets are sealed up. You can do this without fuss simply by using a flexible filler that will create a lasting repair, stretching and flexing as skirting boards, frames and doors move as temperatures change.

8. Mould

As it gets colder, you’ll open your windows less. Keep an eye out for damp or mould. Damp seals will stop it from coming back through, resisting any further moisture and steam.

9. Clean your windows

Give your windows a good clean. Be sure to clean the glass, frame, and windowsill areas, as leaving dirt and debris on window frames can damage the wood and cause rot, leading to leaks and drafts – not ideal in the winter months.

10. Wooden furniture

For a quick and easy interior update, get your indoor space ready for winter socialising and give wooden furniture a makeover. An interior wax will enhance the natural beauty of your wood with a perfect matt, wax look.
