World ending in 2012? Here’s a home to keep you safe

By Phil Scullion

The end of the world is prophesied on 21 December 2024. However, that won’t be a problem for you if you have invested in a survival condo buried deep beneath Kansas, USA.

This unique development is located inside an old nuclear missile silo, which comes with nine feet thick concrete walls and 600 tons of steel. If that doesn’t make you feel safe from impending doom then we’re not sure what will.

So confident is the developer Larry Hall that he has taken one of the seven condos himself and there are just two left on the market.

Living in a post apocalyptic world does not mean skimping on luxury, there is a pool (indoors, obviously), a cinema and library.

A full condo comes with 1,820 square feet of living space, designed to accommodate ten people.

Now all that space would be no good without some fresh food, which is why there is a farm on site, which can provide fresh fish and organic food indefinitely.

When Larry Hall bought the site the silo was in a real state, filled with water and debris. However he saw an opportunity to make use of one of the most solid structures ever built, slowly working to clean it out and make it habitable.

Originally constructed by the US government in 1960, when the cold war was at its most tense and protecting US missiles of paramount importance, the silo cost $15m in US dollars, thought to be worth about $60m in today’s money.

So what will these luxury survival condos actually protect you from?

The dome on top of the silo is designed to withstand winds of up to 500mph (most strong tornados produce winds under 300mph).

There will also be guns (lots of guns) and a remotely piloted vehicle (a plane basically) which can fly up to 5,000ft and has a range of 100 miles.

A military grade security system is in place, although the details of that are understandably under-wraps.

We imagine that all this apocalypse business might get the occupants down which is why each condo has been fitted with outdoor “simulated view” windows. That means you can gaze across your favourite landscape, even if you are deep underground, rather than thinking about this:

That’s not the end of the luxury either, there’s no need to go forth to the end of days without a beautiful kitchen and Jacuzzi.

We also enjoy the idea of there being a huge LED TV in each condo along with internet access. We’re not sure who is going to still be broadcasting at this stage but we guess perhaps Bruce Forsyth will still find a way.

Powering all of this high-tech gadgetry should not be a problem, with a wind turbine, solar array and diesel generator.

Fresh water should also not be an issue, with a huge tank and treatment system to produce near pharmaceutical grade pure water.

So confident are they in the concept that four buyers have already invested a combined total of around $7m in the condos and Larry Hall has plans to expand his enterprise to three more silos when all the condos are sold.

The exact location is a secret, but if Doomsday arrives, then you might wish that you had a plane, a map and the key to one of these fabulous condos.
